Is wire cutting the same as wire EDM?
In manufacturing, wire cutting usually refers to wire EDM: electrical discharge machining using a thin wire electrode to cut conductive materials.
Can wire EDM cut hardened steel?
Yes, hardened steel is one of the common reasons to use wire EDM. The process can cut material after heat treatment, subject to supplier capability and part geometry.
Can it cut aluminium?
Yes, aluminium is conductive and can usually be wire cut. The supplier still needs to confirm grade, thickness, tolerance and finish requirements.
Can wire EDM cut plastic?
Standard wire EDM generally cannot cut plastic because the workpiece must be electrically conductive.
Is wire EDM cheaper than CNC milling?
Not usually for simple parts. Wire EDM is normally chosen when accuracy, hardness, internal profile geometry or burr control makes it the better process.
What files should I send?
A dimensioned drawing is useful. DXF, DWG, STEP or IGES files can also help, depending on the supplier and the part.
Should I contact multiple suppliers?
For unusual materials, larger parts or tight lead times, it is sensible to contact more than one supplier and compare capability, timing and fit.
