How to choose a wire EDM supplier in Perth

The right supplier depends on the material, part size, tolerance, quantity, inspection requirements and whether the job needs other machining operations.

1. Confirm the process is suitable

Wire EDM is for electrically conductive materials. If your part is plastic, rubber, ceramic or composite, it may need another process.

2. Check the work envelope

Maximum part size and cut height vary by machine. Confirm thickness, part dimensions and fixturing requirements before assuming a supplier can cut it.

3. Ask about material experience

Tool steel, stainless, aluminium, copper, carbide and exotic alloys can behave differently. Supplier experience matters, especially on high-value parts.

4. Be clear on tolerance

Do not ask for tighter tolerances than necessary. Over-specifying can increase cost and lead time.

5. Consider secondary operations

Some jobs need milling, turning, grinding, heat treatment, coating, inspection or assembly. A broader machine shop may simplify the project.

6. Confirm inspection and documentation

For critical components, ask whether dimensional reports, first article inspection or material traceability are required and available.

Good questions to ask

  • What is your maximum cut height?
  • What file formats do you prefer?
  • Can you cut this material and hardness?
  • What tolerance is realistic for this part?
  • Can you supply inspection reports?
  • Can you help with drawing review or DfM?
  • Do you handle one-off jobs, production runs or both?
  • What is your current lead time?
